above the moment the response is dispatched. * **Async jobs and browser sessions charge differently.** `POST /v1/web/crawl`, `POST /v1/web/batch-scrape`, `POST /v1/web/agent` and `POST /v1/web/sessions` deduct an upper-bound **hold before the upstream call is made**, then refund the unused portion when the job settles or the session closes — so your balance drops at submit time, by the hold shown in the table, not by a flat per-call price. A job that fails upstream is refunded in full. * **Monitors are a recurring meter.** Creating a monitor is free, but every scheduled check bills its upstream cost plus 1 credit for orchestration, and keeps billing on the cadence you set until you pause or delete it. At the tightest 5-minute cadence that is 288 checks a day. The create response returns `credits_booked` (the upstream cost of one check) — budget `(credits_booked + 1) x checks per month` before leaving one running. * **Cache hits** (`"cached": true`) deduct **0 credits** — see [Credits → Are cache hits free?](/docs/credits.md#are-cache-hits-free). * **Upstream errors, 5xx, and empty-body 404s** automatically refund the deduction. Full matrix in [Credits → When are credits refunded?](/docs/credits.md#when-are-credits-refunded). * **Idempotent retries** with the same `Idempotency-Key` header charge once, no matter how many times you replay. A replay keeps the cached payload immutable except for billing metadata: `credits_used` is 0 and `idempotent_replay` is true. A known current balance is refreshed in body `credits_remaining` and the `X-Credits-Remaining` header; no balance row resolves to 0. On a transient lookup failure, body `credits_remaining` is null and `X-Credits-Remaining` is omitted. Your remaining balance normally comes back as body `credits_remaining` and the `X-Credits-Remaining` header. The header is conditional when a replay cannot read the balance.
